How can I find out information about a public/private company in Ontario before I invest in the company?

Our response:

If the company is a public company in Canada, disclosure documents are filed on the System for Document Analysis and Retrieval (SEDAR) at www.sedar.com. Information about principals in the company can be found in the disclosure documents on SEDAR (for example, the Management Discussion and Analysis will include information about compensation of executive officers and directors). Here is an article on where to get information on a company. There is also information on the OSC website about disclosure rules for public companies in Canada.

If the company is not a public company, you can ask the company directly for this information. If they are incorporated in Ontario, you can conduct a public record search.

If you have more questions, contact the OSC Inquiries and Contact Centre.
